Orem • While Richfield didn’t factor in the final team standings, freshman wrestler Denim Torgerson made the rest of the state take notice.

Torgerson put the final touches on a 58-1 season with a 5-2 decision over Morgan’s Joseph Mecham in the 106-pound state title match at the Class 3A state wrestling meet Saturday at Utah Valley University.

Torgerson seemed to have his hands full with Mecham before scoring three points nearly halfway through the match, which proved to be the difference.

“I can’t put it into words,” Torgerson said. “It’s been my dream forever.”

Torgerson opened Saturday’s action with a pin of American Leadership’s Sage Mortimer in the state semifinals to advance to the title match against Mecham.

And Torgerson says he went into the final day of the season knowing he put his heart and soul into the season.

“I did everything I could,” he said. “I set myself up to win.”

Torgerson, who began wrestling 10 years ago, says the time he has put into the sport has been the key to his success. He managed to stay focused on the task at hand during the state meet.

“It’s a big tournament and it’s the end of the season,” he said. “But you’ve been working for this every year.”

Torgerson got started in the sport by his father and has been wrestling competitively since fifth grade.

“My dad wrestled when he was younger and he started me in it,” Torgerson said. “And I stuck with it ever since.”

With three years of varsity eligibility left, Torgerson has set some lofty expectations for himself.

“Four time state champion,” he said.

But he isn’t going to get ahead of himself.

“Keep your head on, stay working and stay humble,” he said. “Just because you’re winning doesn’t mean you can’t get beat.”

His title celebration plans echoed that.

“I’m going to go drink a Dr. Pepper and settle down,” he said.

Richfield was 10th in the team standings with 66 points. Juab won the team title with 304 points and had five wrestlers win individual state titles. Delta (224.5), Morgan (171), Union (132) and Emery (128) rounded out the top five.
